Discrimination
in the Workplace
Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act
Title VII prohibits
discrimination in the workplace. It is unlawful for an employer to discharge,
refuse to hire, refuse to promote or otherwise discriminate against
a person with respect to his or her conditions of employment because
of the person's race, color, religion, sex, age or national origin.
Title VII does not prohibit employment decisions or actions that stem
from legitimate, non-discriminatory motives. A finding of discrimination
must be supported by documentary and/or oral evidence. Remedies available
to a successful complainant include reinstatement and back pay. If you
are in need of the protection offered under Title VII, contact your
regional EEO Representative or the EO Center at headquarters.
